If they insist that they returned it already, I get them to help me do a quick check in the library. In Burbank, California, the Burbank Public Library became fine free on July 1, eliminating fees for overdue books and. After I reassure them that we’re just chatting, I ask them when they saw it last, and we make a plan for them to search their home and classroom. Libraries across the United States are eliminating late fees for overdue books. Many students get nervous as soon as they think a lecture is coming….especially if they know they have lost the book. Whenever I speak with students about overdue books, I ALWAYS start with telling them they are not in trouble. They enjoy watching the messages, so I’m happy they see the overdue information here as well! No matter if you are elementary, middle school, or high school, when we tell a student they have an overdue library book, the ‘reasons’ offered come in 3 forms: avoidance, blame, or contrition.
